2003 Reunion Tour Interview with Brendan Harkin
by Brynn Arens of Flipp

First of all let me say congratulations on a very successful reunion tour. It was a real treat to hear a awesome real rock and roll band again...

Now won't you all please welcome.....One of the greatest tag team guitar players in the world....Mr. Brendan Harkin!

Q: What did you do to prepare yourself for the reunion shows?
A: I went back and listened a little to the old stuff, mostly live versions. Changed to what I consider pretty heavy guage strings (10,13,16,26,36,46 John Pearse) tuned down to E flat, put on the headphones and made sure I could remember everything. Came pretty easy. Remember, we played this stuff a million times before recording it and 2 million afterwards. If I only had a dollar for every time!

Q: What were you thinking just before you walked on stage for the first reunion show?
A: Should I drink one more beer or will I have to take a piss in the middle of the show. No nerves, just, 'Let's Roll".

Q: How did you feel after the shows?
A: All 3 shows were great. Few train wrecks and total Starz fanatics to play for.

Q: It seemed as though time stood still for you guys, you were proof positive that chemistry is what makes a great rock and roll band. Given the opportunity would you like to do more Starz shows?
A: It's like riding a bike... There WILL be more Starz shows, promise...

Q: What would you say are your favorite three Starz songs?
A: Nitecrawler, Steady, Violation, hands down...

Q: As a kid, what was it that made you say to yourself ......MMMM..I want to play guitar in a rock and roll band?
A: A birthmark the shape of a Starz logo on my ass...

Q: Have you recently written any songs that you would like to record with Starz today?
A: Dozens... Chicken Head Stew being my favorite.

Q: I understand since Starz disbanded, you now own and operate a recording studio in Nashville. Can you please tell us if there was anything you found significant when working with Jack Douglas that you were able to incorporate into your own producing style?
A: Proper etiquett while smoking coke...

Q: The category is "Fantasy band".... Alive or deceased who would be in your "Fantasy band"?
A: Levon Helm on every instrument.
